Mud (2012)

Another film recommendation…

Personally, I think the real protagonists of this film are the two boys: Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland). They reminded me much of Stand by Me, another brilliant film where boys are absolute protagonists and, in all honesty, it makes me angry that girls usually don’t play such great characters (with some exceptions, of course, like Wadjda).

Although I’m in two minds about Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), I am certain that Jeff Nichols -writer and director of Mud– couldn’t have made a better decision than taking on Matthew McConaughey to embody Mud: his performance is, I believe, well and truly exceptional.

Also, the film has been compared with the novel Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. “It so elegantly addresses what masculinity and family really mean in the heartland,” Debruge said and added that the Mississippi River in Mud was “a mythic backdrop… in which old values struggle against stronger modern forces in the world.”
